How to Use Fiebing’s Leather Dye

Fiebing’s Leather Dye is designed to soak into the leather rather than sit on the surface, giving a rich, lasting colour that highlights the natural grain and character of the material. When applied properly, it produces a professional, even finish that enhances the beauty of your leather project.
Re-dyeing smooth leather usually involves three key steps: removing the existing finish, applying the dye, and sealing everything with a protective topcoat. Because every leather type absorbs dye differently, we always recommend testing on a scrap piece or hidden area before working on your final item.
1. Prepare & Strip the Leather
For the dye to properly penetrate, the leather needs to be as close to its natural state as possible. Any remaining finish, paint, or old dye can block absorption and may cause colour rub-off later.
Use Fiebing’s Deglazer to carefully strip away the existing finish and create a clean surface ready for dye.

2. Apply the Dye
Once the leather is fully clean and dry, you can begin dyeing. Apply Fiebing’s Leather Dye using a wool dauber, sponge, or soft cloth. Work in small circular motions to avoid streaks and achieve an even colour.
If you prefer stronger, longer-lasting colour with reduced fading, consider using Fiebing’s Pro Dye, which offers enhanced vibrancy and UV resistance.
3. Seal the Finish
Once the dye has fully dried, gently buff the leather with a clean cloth to remove any excess pigment.
After buffing, apply a topcoat such as Fiebing’s Resolene to seal the dye and add a protective, water-resistant finish.

Application Tips:
  • Stir, don’t shake: Mix Resolene by stirring to prevent air bubbles forming.
  • Use a damp sponge: A fine-cell sponge slightly moistened with water helps create a smooth, streak-free finish and reduces the chance of “fish eyes” (patchy bubbles).
The product may look slightly blue during application, but it dries to a clear, glossy coat.

Helpful Tips:
  • Custom colours: Fiebing’s dyes can be mixed to create unique shades. Keep notes on your ratios if you want to recreate the colour later.
  • Always test first: Try your chosen colour on scrap leather or an inconspicuous spot.
  • Lighten colours: Use Fiebing’s Dye Reducer to dilute the dye for softer tones.
  • Upholstery caution: For padded items with foam filling, avoid over-saturating the leather, as excess dye may soak through the padding and cause long-term colour bleed.

Description

A classic, alcohol-based leather dye for leatherworkers, saddlers, bag makers and craft professionals who want rich, even colour that penetrates deeply into the leather for long-lasting results. Fiebing’s Leather Dye in Green (118 ml) uses a penetrating formula designed for natural hides and vegetable-tanned leathers, helping you achieve consistent, vibrant finish that becomes part of the material rather than sitting on the surface.

This traditional dye is ideal for small to medium leather projects where you want durable colour with excellent coverage — from belts, wallets and straps to bespoke accessories or decorative panel work. Because it soaks beneath the grain, the dyed surface resists rubbing and fading better than surface paints or coatings, making it suitable for items that will see regular use.

Key Features:

  • Alcohol-based penetrating dye — formulated to absorb into leather fibres for uniform colour.

  • Green shade — vibrant colour that adds a bold, distinctive finish to leatherwork.

  • 118 ml (4 fl oz) size — ideal for small to medium projects and frequent workshop use.

  • Excellent coverage and consistency — helps produce even colour with fewer applications.

  • Resilient colourfastness — helps resist fading and wear over time.

Whether you’re custom-colouring wallets, belts, bag panels or small hide pieces, this Green Leather Dye delivers professional-quality penetration and colour that enhances the aesthetic of your handcrafted work. For best results, prepare the leather with a deglazer or cleaner, apply the dye evenly with a sponge or applicator, allow it to dry fully and follow with a protective leather finish to lock in the colour and enhance durability.
