S/STEEL DE FLOCKING IRON 18" 6mm
- Specialised De-Flocking Tool: Made for efficiently removing old wool or synthetic flock from inside saddle panels as part of reflocking or panel adjustment work.
- Stainless Steel Construction: Durable, corrosion-resistant steel ensures the tool holds up to repeated use in workshop conditions.
- Generous Length: At 18″ (45 cm) long with a 6 mm thick blade, the iron gives excellent reach and surface contact for larger panels.
- British Made: Designed and manufactured in Great Britain, reflecting Abbey England’s commitment to quality workshop tools.
This de-flocking iron is primarily used to remove old flock from saddle panels — a necessary step before adding new flock or adjusting panel shape and balance. Old wool or flock can become compacted or uneven over time, so carefully removing it allows a fitter or saddler to inspect the panel and prepare for fresh stuffing.
- Prepare the Saddle:
Remove the saddle panel lining or open the panel so you can access the inside where the old flock is packed. - Position the Iron:
Hold the de-flocking iron by its handle or gripping area and insert the blade into the panel where the old flock needs to be removed. - Work the Flock:
- Push and slide the iron through the wool or fibre, using smooth, controlled motions.
- Angle the tool as needed to reach deeper sections of the panel — the 18″ length gives good access.
- Use light pressure to loosen and pull-out fibres without damaging the panel cover or internal structures.
- Clear Debris:
Periodically remove the loosened flock from the workspace, either by hand or with brush/vacuum, to keep your work area clear. - Check Panel Condition:
Continue until old flocking is cleared and the panel is ready for inspection or refilling with new flock.
- Go Slow, Be Gentle: De-flocking irons are designed for careful removal — avoid aggressive scraping, which can stretch or damage the leather panel.
- Use with Other Tools: Combine with other reflocking essentials like awls, short blades, and brushes for a thorough job.
- Workshop Safety: Wear protective gloves and work on a stable surface to control the iron safely.
