BUCKLES FOR PET ACCESSORIES

_________________________________________

Buckles used for pet collars and leads are designed to provide secure, adjustable, and durable fastening for animals of all sizes. Several specialised buckles are commonly used in pet accessories. Caveson buckles feature a flat, rectangular frame with a central prong, commonly used on leather dog collars for a classic and secure fit. Material matters...

Brass

Durability: Brass is a strong and durable material that can withstand wear and tear. This makes it ideal for use in luggage and bags, which are subjected to frequent handling and exposure to the elements.

Corrosive resistance: Brass is resistant to corrosion, which means it can withstand exposure to moisture, salt, and other corrosive substances. This makes it a great choice for bags and luggage that may be exposed to harsh environments.

Easy to work with: Brass is a relatively soft material that can be easily molded and shaped. This makes it easy to create intricate designs and details in buckles, which can enhance the overall look and feel of the luggage or bag.

Iron

High Strength & Durability:  Iron is a strong material capable of withstanding significant tension and pressure, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications like harnesses, work belts, and military equipment.

Cost: Iron is a cheap metal to use therefore it is mass-produced so widely available.

Wear Resistance: Iron buckles hold up well against repeated use and friction, making them suitable for long-term applications in leathercraft, equestrian tack, and industrial hardware.

Customisation Potential: Iron can be cast, forged, or stamped into intricate designs, allowing for unique and decorative buckle styles.

However, iron does have some drawbacks, such as its susceptibility to rust if left untreated. But with proper care and coatings, it remains a strong and functional material for buckles, it can be treated with coatings like powder coating, enamel, or galvanization to improve corrosion resistance and extend its lifespan.

NICKEL

Nickel is the white metal alternative to brass.

Long-Lasting Durability: Nickel is known for its incredible strength and resistance to rust and corrosion.

Environmentally Friendly: Nickel is recyclable, so choosing a buckle made of this material is an eco-conscious decision, helping to reduce waste in the fashion and accessories industry.

Ease of Molding: Nickel can be easily cast into various shapes and designs, allowing for the creation of intricate and unique buckle styles.

Strength: Nickel is a tough and hard metal, giving buckles a solid structure that can withstand heavy use without bending or breaking.

STAINLESS STEEL

Corrosion: This metal stands strong against corrosion, rust, water stains, and more. When stainless steel is fabricated, chrome is added, which joins the oxygen in the air to create a film over the metal.

Sustainability: Stainless steel is the material that keeps on giving.  Once it has outlived its original purpose, it can be recycled.

Stainless Steel is very tough, and even lightweight stainless steel won’t buckle under great weight, making it one of the most durable metals on the market.  It can endure weight, hot and cold temperatures as well as weather extremes.

Low Allergic Reaction: Most stainless steel alloys are hypoallergenic, making them suitable for sensitive skin.

Choosing the right fit...

As the UK leading buckle wholesaler, we pride ourselves on both our quality and range. Whether you are sourcing specialised bridle buckles and harness buckles or looking for a statement belt buckle, Abbey England can fulfil your requirements. With over 3000 buckles to choose from, we stock sizes from 10mm internal diameter up to 75mm internal diameter.

When measuring buckles, it’s important to note that the size listed refers to the width of the strap that will fit through the buckle, not the overall dimensions of the buckle itself. To ensure a proper fit, measure the width of your strap at the point where the buckle will be attached. For example, if you have a 25mm strap, you should choose a 25mm buckle. Keep in mind that different buckle styles, such as roller or belt buckles, may have slightly different proportions, but the strap width remains the key measurement.

Always double-check your strap size before purchasing to ensure a secure and professional fit.

TIPS ON HOW TO MEASURE FROM KATY WARRINER

______________________________________________________________

When measuring for a buckle, always measure the inside width from left to right. This internal dimension determines the width of the leather strap needed. The length of the buckle is also important, depending on its intended use. For example, when making a belt for a person, aesthetics often influence the choice, and a longer buckle may be suitable. However, when making a strap for an animal, the length must be carefully considered ensuring comfort and welfare, as animals have no concern for appearance—only function and safety matter.

For made-to-measure belts, I ask customers to use specific measuring methods to ensure accuracy. Since buckles vary in size, I do not include them in the measurement, as their existing buckle might be longer or shorter than the one I provide. For example, a West End buckle from Abbey may be 2/8ths of an inch shorter than the customer's original buckle, which could affect the final fit.

Additionally, the size and girth of the buckle tongue or prong must be considered when determining the hole size. For harness-style buckles, such as the West End buckle, an oval punch should be used instead of a round one. This allows the prong to sit at a more natural angle within the leather, improving comfort and functionality.

To measure an existing belt, lay it flat and measure from the leather fold (excluding the buckle) to the most-used hole. Alternatively, measuring around the waist where the belt will sit provides an accurate size. A general guideline is to add 2 inches to trouser size for a traditional fit or 3 inches for low-rise trousers.

By following these methods and considering the buckle’s internal width, length, and prong size, customers can ensure a well-fitting and functional belt or strap, whether for fashion, utility, or animal welfare.
