On 9 March 2022, led by Make it British, we are celebrating Made in UK day, a day dedicated to UK-made goods and manufacturing in the UK.
Make it British was founded on 9th March 2011 with the aim of supporting UK businesses and manufacturing. We share the belief that UK manufacturing is worth preserving. From supporting local economies, to securing the future of UK craftsmanship and lowering our carbon footprint, there are lots of positives to buying British.
Why is it important?
If everyone bought just one item made in the UK worth £20 on #madeinukday it would inject £1.3 billion into the economy!At Abbey supporting UK manufacturing is close to our hearts. From our foundry in Walsall, we produce a range of high quality brass hardware. We also manufacture equestrian accessories under our Equus brand and we are the only UK bit manufacturer. It doesn’t stop there. Where possible we source our products from UK manufacturers supplying us with trees, leather, heavy cotton webbing, flocking and Barnsley tools and more.

Abbey Hardware
From the last brass foundry in the UK we produce a range of our very own brass hardware.
Our brass belt buckles, case fittings, locks, stirrup bars, sundials and door knockers are cast from solid brass and individually checked, guaranteeing the best quality.

Our skilled production team can also create custom-made pieces of hardware to meet your requirements (however, our pattern shop is a little busy at the moment, so leads times are approximately 4 months).
Abbey Bits
Back in 2018, we bought our bit supplier, preserving UK bit manufacturing and saving 5 incredibly important jobs. As the last British bit manufacture, our bits are hand finished and individually checked for quality. Made from high quality metal and the best vulcanite in the world, we supply bespoke cheek and mouthpiece combinations to your exact specifications if needed.With more than 350 designs, we're sure we can meet your needs. Abbey Girth Straps
We cut all our girth straps in house to your specification. We offer a range of different leathers including vegetable tanned, chrome tanned, buffalo hide and rawhide, available in different lengths.Equus
Equus is a leading British brand for rubber riding accessories. The range incudes overreach boots, quarter boots, rein grips and bit guards amongst other products.Our entire range is produced in our Walsall factory using premium UK sourced rubber.

Sedgwick Leather
Back in 2019 we led a consortium to save Sedgwick Leather and invested £1.5m to ensure its UK manufacturing stayed in the UK.Sedgwicks make traditional bridle leather of the highest quality. Their expert curriers use high-quality hides and finish the leather by hand, utilising many of the same skills employed at the beginning of the century.
From the Sedgwick 1900 collection to the Sedgwick bridle back and mini bridle butt our Sedgwick range will suit all kinds of leather projects.
Webbing
We have a number of webbing options that are UK manufactured. This includes our heavy cotton webbing, plain polyprop webbing and our cushion and air web. Please check the product description for Made in the UK.Barnsley Tools
We supply tools manufactured by George Barnsley, which are all hand crafted in Sheffield, including awls, clicker blades, and leather knives.Saddle Trees
We are the only UK wholesaler to stock a large variety of traditional saddle trees from the world’s leading tree manufacturers, including Aulton & Butler, Lariot and Walsall Riding.Our saddle trees are available in a range of sizes from 14” to 18” and a variety of width fits. The extensive range suits any discipline; leisure riding, dressage, show jumping, eventing polo, horse-racing, or military.
Flocking
Our UK flocking is available in four different options depending on your needs.100% long fibre white wool flock - one of the best quality wools for flocking, Jacobs brown wool flock -100% natural lamb wool, White wool mix flock 80/20 and Coloured synthetic flock.
Rein Tips and Ornaments
Our UK partner manufacturers a wide range of decorative harness fittings in solid brass and nickel. Choose from a wide variety of shapes, patterns and sizes.Foams
We stock the very best British foams such as Plastazote and Neoprene. Both foams are widely used in the equestrian, leathergoods and shoe trade
