CUTTING MADE EASY

A leather strap cutter is a great tool for cutting leather straps, ideal for small workshops and those starting out in leatherwork.

Below we look at the basics to get you started.

HOW TO ASSEMBLE A STRAP CUTTER

First insert the blade by unscrewing the blade protectors and end screws and feed the blade through the slots. You must make sure the sharp end is facing towards the numbers. When putting the bar on make sure the number scale and the sharp piece of the blade are facing towards your hand.

Set the bar to the thickness of your leather using the smaller thumbscrew. Make sure the 2 bars are parallel as this keeps the blade at 90 degrees. It is important that the leather has enough clearance to pass through easily so that it does not snag or mark the leather.

Set the bar to the desired width using the end thumbscrew to untighten the bar and slide to the desired measurement. Make sure you retighten the screws so the cutter is securely in place as you don’t want any movement whilst cutting.

HOW TO USE A STRAP CUTTER

  1. Press the cutter against a straight edge and pull the strap cutter through the leather. Make sure you keep it pressed against the edge.
  2. With this hand tool you have control, so use the cutter at your own pace.
  3. Cut over the edge of a table to make cutting easier.
Pro tip: Technically the cutter isn’t at exactly 90 degrees so when cutting thicker leather, place a paper wedge in by the scale to slightly change the angle to help keep the cutter on track.
