 ABBEY RUNNING GAGS

_________________________________________________________________

A Running Gag looks like a Snaffle bit with the addition of two adjacent holes in its ring. There are number of different designs available. Running Gags describes the action as the bit runs upwards upon the specially adapted rounded leather or nylon cord cheek pieces. These cheek pieces pass through the bit cheeks with their lower section concluding in rings to which the reins are attached. The cheekpieces' top end buckles onto the bridles headpiece. Riding in a Running Gag every day is not to be recommended but it can be useful bit when additional control is required for a strong horse in fast work.

Many designs of mouthpiece are available to cater for a wide range of mouth types and requirements.

More about running gags

Regardless of the pressure applied over the horse’s head, it should be noted that the overriding action of a Running Gag is to lift the head and neck. A Running Gag looks like a Snaffle bit with the addition of two adjacent holes in its ring.

For horses in fast work who tend to lean or go with their head down below the line of control from the rider’s hand to the bit, a Running Gag can be effective.  Riding in a Running Gag every day is not to be recommended, but it can be useful bit when additional control is required for a strong horse in fast work.

The use of two reins is possible. The top (Snaffle) rein is attached directly to the side rings of the bit, being used the majority of the time.  A thinner rein being placed on the rings at the end of the cheek piece to be used with care only as required.
