How do you take care of leather?

It’s important to keep your leather in good condition, which will help to prolong its life. Fundamentally, you should treat leather like your skin. If your leather dries out, it will be more prone to water spotting and other damage.

We have a wide range of leather care products from Fiebing’s and Sedgwick’s including leather conditioner and leather protection designed to keep your leather healthy.

Leather hides

The following leather care products are great for cleaning leather:

In handy wipes, the Fiebing’s leather cleaner is great for saddles, tack and leather furniture. Specifically designed for suede and nubuck leather, the Fiebing suede & nubuck cleaner kit includes a bar and bristled brush to erase dirt and restore the nap. If you are looking for shampoos for leather, try Fiebing’s (Kelly) leather lotion to clean, polish and protect your leather.

The following products are ideal for cleaning and preserving saddlery leather:

Fiebing’s Saddle Soap is used on fine saddlery, boots and other smooth leather articles, and cleans and lubricates to prevent brittleness. The Fiebing’s Glycerine bar cleans and preserves leather, restoring it to its full bodied suppleness and is also available to apply as a liquid saddle soap - Fiebing’s Liquid Glycerine Saddle Soap

To replenish your leather use:

Segwick leather care – this dressing is made from a mixture of tallow, oils and beeswax and is designed for everyday use. Simply wipe down your leather and apply the dressing sparingly to both the grain and flesh side of the leather.

For leather subjected to rugged outdoor use:

Use Fiebing’s Saddle oil, which will preserve and lubricate the leather, or Fiebing’s Pure Neatsfoot Oil.  Neatfoot oil has been used by saddle makers for over a century to replace the lost oils in the leather.  Fiebing’s Neatsfoot Compound restores the suppleness to the top of the leather, as well as softening and waterproofing smooth leather. If you are looking to help leather withstand hot, dry conditions as well as bitter cold and dry areas, we recommend the Aussie leather conditioner. As further leather protection, try Fiebing snow proof specially designed for waterproofing smooth leather.

For an all-round product Use:

Fiebing 4 Way Leather Care is a 4 in 1 leather conditioner and cleaner that will preserve, strengthen, clean and beautify your leather goods.

TOP TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER YOUR LEATHER GOODS

DON’T LET IT DRY OUT

Stop leather from drying out by keeping it fed. Gently apply a wax such as Sedgwick’s leather care or Abbey saddle balm. As there is an increased chance of drying during transportation and production of bridles, fashion belts etc. we recommend feeding your leather before point of sale every time.

AVOID SUN EXPOSURE

Do not store leather in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. If this cannot be avoided we recommend using leather protection such as Fiebing’s UV leather shield. Apply on a monthly basis to protect the colour of your leather.

AVOID SHARP EDGES

Keep your leather away from sharp edges and animal claws to prevent it from being scored.

CLEAN REGULARLY

Wipe regularly with a dry clean cloth to prevent the excessive build-up of grit and dirt, which could cause an abrasive effect.

AVOID HEAT & DAMP

Avoid storing leather near intense heat sources such as open fires and in damp areas.

CLEAR UP SPILLS QUICKLY

Cear up spills as soon as possible before the liquid sets. Use a damp clean cloth to wipe and leave to dry.

AVOID AMMONIA BASED PRODUCTS

Do not use furniture polish, abrasive cleaners, varnishes or any ammonia based products as these products may contain solvents which can break down the protective coatings of the leather
