THE AMERICAN GAG
The American “Gag” has long metal cheeks that extend below the mouthpiece with the rein attached to the bottom ring. A strong leverage action can be applied  which will place a focused downwards pressure across the mouth, tilting the mouthpiece forwards.

The angle at which the horse holds his head and neck will affect the action of the mouthpiece across the lips tongue and bars.

The long cheeks above and below the bit can aid with directional guidance and help to a degree to keep the mouthpiece central. Care needs to be taken to make sure that the horse’s lips do not get pinched as the lever action is brought into play. Bit Guards will help to prevent this but if used a wider bit will be required to allow space for them.

Generally, it is a bit for the educated and experienced rider, if required for fast work.

It is available in a wide range of mouthpieces to accommodate the requirements of many mouth types including cherry roller, Waterford, jointed, ported and many more.

HOW ARE YOUR AMERICAN GAG BITS MEASURED?

Please note, that we define the cheek of the American Gag as from the top to the bottom as shown and it is 8.5" as standard.

Our mouth width is the measurement of the mouth between the ring pieces and not the full length of the mouthpiece.

Remember not to have too tight of a fit. You should always leave a little room on each side for comfort.
